Tucked away in Tai Tapu, just twenty minutes drive from Christchurch city in the glorious South Island of New Zealand is Otahuna Lodge. Built in 1895 for Sir Heaton Rhodes, a high-profile pioneer of Canterbury, the homestead is considered one of the best examples of unspoiled Queen Anne architecture in Australasia. Praised for its irregular shape, romantic rooflines, extensive use of New Zealand timber, and elaborate architectural detail, Otahuna is now protected by a Category One listing from the New Zealand Historic places trust.
Otahuna Lodge is an intimate retreat offering 5 suites and 2 master suites. Each retains architectural features from the 19th century such as ornate original fireplaces, carved inglenooks and stained glass windows. All suites offer super-king beds, fine custom-made linens, toiletries by Penhaligon's of London, deep bathtubs and separate rain showers
The spectacular 110-year old gardens of Otahuna were laid out and cultivated under the direction of A. E. Lowe who trained at Kew Gardens, London. Wide vistas over lawn and lake contrast beautifully with
intimate walks winding through heavily wooded areas. The gardens offer a range of guest amenities & activities including swimming, tennis, croquet and petanque among others.
Daily tariffs include a 5-course degustation dinner with wine pairings to accompany each course, pre- dinner drinks with canapés, continental and/or full cooked breakfast and full use of Lodge facilities and equipment.
Named for the Lady of the House, Jessie Clark, the Clark Suite looks east over the treetops to the Port Hills. The soft yellows and blues of this classic suite draw their inspiration from the expansive stained glass windows, tiled fireplace and traditional English country ambience of the estate.
After a day of exploring Canterbury, the Clark suite is an ideal place to relax, either in front of the fire or in the spa tub. The paintings of nearby Akaroa harbour will inspire one to see what lies just beyond the hill outside the window
